Center for Excellence in the Management of Female Pelvic Floor Disorders
Pursuit of Evidence-Based Successful Outcomes
Who We Are
We essentially have two separate but intertwined corporations:
Advanced Urogynecology of Michigan P.C. (AUGM) is the clinical practice that is involved with direct patient care.
Michigan Institute of Women's Health P.C. (MIWH) is the research division that conducts clinical trials in the field of Pelvic Medicine. MIWH is involved in several National Institute of Health (NIH) clinical trials. We strongly believe in evidence-based practice.
We shall enhance the health and quality of life of our patients. We shall provide a one-stop-shop for our patients by offering them multi-modal, comprehensive and complete management protocols for pelvic floor disorders. We shall continue to do research of the highest standards in order to provide our patients with Evidence-Based therapeutic choices and not just hand-me-downs.
Our Medical Director
Salil Khandwala, MD FPMRS FACOG is President and Medical Director of Advanced Urogynecology of Michigan P.C.
He is also the Director of Urogynecology at Oakwood Healthcare System. He has received the European Diploma in Operative Endoscopy conferred on him by the University of Clermont Ferrand, France during his two year training there.
He did his fellowship in Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and the University of Maryland, Baltimore. He was a Urogynecology faculty at the University of Maryland prior to moving to Michigan in 2002. He has established a strong Female Pelvic Floor Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery program in Michigan and is well recognized by his peers as an authority in the management of urinary/fecal incontinence and genital organ prolapse. Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery became an official sub-specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2013 and Dr. Khandwala is now board certified in FPMRS.
Dr. Khandwala was the first surgeon to perform the TVT-O transobturator procedure outpatient surgery for incontinence in SE Michigan. He also was the first surgeon in the world to perform the TVT-secur, an ultra minimally invasive surgery for stress urinary incontinence.
At AUGM we have one of the largest series in Vaginal Reconstructive surgery for the management of prolapse in the country. Dr. Khandwala performs uterine preservation surgery for prolapse thereby avoiding a hysterectomy. We are one of the few certified sites in the world that perform incontinence surgery in the office entirely under local anesthesia.
What is Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS)?
FPMRS is a unique field. It is neither urology nor is it gynecology or a hybrid for that matter. It is a separate field entirely that addresses conditions of the female pelvic floor. It is an American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology approved sub-specialty.
